Maggie’s Emporium

Posted by 24 Oct, 2008

Preserved sunshine. That’s what Maggie Mitchell has written on her business card. When Maggie retired 10 years ago, she wanted to keep active, she wanted to be creative. She had room on her one acre of land to grow many plants and she loved to garden. Maggie started making wreaths for family members. Out of that came Maggie’s Emporium, supplier of dried flowers and natural decorative products. She finds the Owen Sound Farmers’ Market a natural place for her creations because the people who shop there frequently grow things themselves. She also appreciates that her stall is set up beside food suppliers, she says.

Wreaths are a large part of her sales and they vary from season to season. She makes wreaths from wild grasses in June and likes to use unusual plants: curly docks, for example, she says, but thistles do not work very well! This year, she is working with tall hedge mustard and experimenting with other plants, plants that retain their colour when dried. In her work room she has a variety of plants already dried. She gets her creative design ideas from the plants themselves, using a combination of colour and contrast.

Maggie has some stunning wreaths for the holiday season, so be sure to stop by her booth. She is at the Owen Sound Farmers’ Market from April until the end of December.
